Chinese lithium battery company BAK Battery and US-based battery platform provider Cadenza Innovation have signed a cooperation agreement to manufacture lithium-ion cells and modules based upon Cadenza’s ‘supercell’ technology.

The companies said they aim to commercialise new products using Cadenza’s technology, which “provides higher safety, lower cost and higher energy density”.

Construction of the BAK supercell and module production line at the firm’s Zhengzhou Industrial Park in Shenzhen is already under way. Mass production is expected to be up and running early in 2019.

Supercell technology “is designed for the two fastest-growing markets— electric vehicles and grid storage”, Cadenza said.

According to Cadenza, its technology offers “a unique cell design that combines the best properties from wound jelly rolls and large prismatic cells”.

Cadenza founder and CEO Dr. Lampe-Onnerud said the partnership “will enable new technologies and breakthroughs for the lithium battery industry”.
